Buster turns three

Our little baby has had another birthday.  While he still might be a small fry compared to his brother and sister, it is hard to admit that he is growing up and isn't a baby anymore but a little boy.  Or in his own words "I'm not a baby, I'm Buster Boo".  It's times like these that you really wish you could stop time so you can savour, just a little bit longer, the precious moments of your children.  But time is not standing still for Buster Boo.  He has turned three.

The day started for me at 5.00am when Henry came into our bed.  He couldn't sleep because he was excited it was Buster's birthday.  I was fully expecting him to wake Buster up as well, but thankfully no.  I tried to get back to sleep but couldn't - neither could Henry.

The birthday boy was the next to wake and came into our room at around 6.30am.  His first words of the day were "Is it my birthday today mama?".  We told him he couldn't open any presents because Milly was still asleep.  Buster decided he would play her some music to wake her up.  He grabbed a toy musical instrument, went into her room and started making some noise.  Hey presto!  Milly was awake.  Had it not been his birthday, I'm sure Milly would not have been so pleased.

Power Rangers and Lego Ninjago.  If it's not ninja related and/or a weapon, it's just not Buster's thing.

Assembling some Lego.

Buster set about opening his presents and after each one would ask "Is it mine?".  Henry was keen to put together anything that needed assembling and was very helpful.  Then it was time for breakfast and to get Henry and Milly off to school and preschool.

It was lovely to spend the day with Buster, just the three of us (Michael was working from home).  We played, chatted, read stories, cuddled, I put together some more Lego, and then it was time to start work on decorating his cake.

Buster had always been clear that he wanted a red Lego Ninjago birthday cake.  No problem I said.  I did a little online research and found a few examples.  I bought all the icing, rolled it all out, everything was ready to be assembled on the day.... and then Buster said he wanted a green one instead.  Aaarrggghhhh!!!!!  It just wasn't going to happen.  The red Ninjago and the red Power Ranger are Buster's favourites.  I was sticking with red.  He had a little tantrum about it, but by the time it was his birthday and I was decorating his cake he had forgotten all about it and was excited with his red cake.  Phew.

We didn't have a party.  Just a family dinner with cake and some lollies to celebrate.  It had been a wonderful day.  Earlier when Buster had been playing I had gone back over this blog, rereading his birth story, looking at all the early photos of him and younger versions of Henry and Milly.   Wishing again than time would stand still.

I then realised how I wanted the day to end.  I wanted to cuddle up to Buster and have him fall asleep in my arms, just as he did when he was a newborn.  But when it came to bedtime, he had jumped into Henry's bed and they were having a little play and snuggle together.  Their giggling was infectious, so I kissed them both goodnight and left them to it.  It wasn't long before all was quiet in the house.  I crept back into their room and found them asleep together.  I was totally jealous, but couldn't deny their peaceful moment together.

Our sleeping boys, arms entwined.

When I woke up the next morning Buster was sleeping beside me in my bed.  Turns out he had awoke during the night and when Michael went in to see him all he wanted was cuddles with mama.  Michael told me when he placed Buster in our bed he wriggled his way across until he was snuggled against my back.  Turns out the day ended just perfectly.

Wax on, wax off

Henry has started learning karate and loves it. It is such a positive and healthy sport for kids. It teaches them empowerment, respect, helps with self confidence, focus and resilience.  Hopefully, some or all those things will rub off on our little Mister.  But he's having fun with it and that's the most important part.

Meanwhile, Michael is hoping Henry will learn skills to help around the house like sanding and painting, and waxing the car.
