The last first cut

It's a bit of a sad time in our house.  There are a lot of "lasts" happening.  By this I mean it's not just the last time Buster slept in his cot, but the last time we will use the cot.  With everything Buster has used and grown out of (clothes, high chair, toys, books etc) it is also the last time for all of us.  There are so many wonderful memories we have of all the kids using this stuff that it's a little emotional saying goodbye for the last time to it all.

And so it was with the very first haircut we gave Buster.  We knew he needed the haircut.  He had a nasty looking matted mess at the back of his head that no comb could get through.  As it is so cold at the moment we thought we could hold off on giving him the haircut until spring or summer.  However our hand was forced.  You see our little man had been a bit sick and he got some vomit in his hair and we weren't convinced after washing it that we'd got all the vomit out of his matted mess.

The matted mess

So reluctantly it had to be done.  It's Michael's job to give the first hair cut.  Well any type of hair cut actually.  I'm not so good at it.  He sat Buster down and tried to get a smock on him to protect his clothes, but Buster would have none of it.  To get him to sit still we offered him an icy pole, but he refused it.  Success was had with putting on Toy Story and he sat there happily while Michael snipped away.

The first cut

Half way there.

Other than taking a couple of photos, I couldn't watch it all unfold.  In fact, just like when Henry had his first hair cut, it has taken me weeks to get used to it and recognise my little man again.  I love long hair on my boys but will be the first to admit it is easier to wash and look after when it is shorter.

I kept the bowl of hair for over a week before picking out some bits and putting them away for a keepsake.  Now my baby boy looks more like a little boy, and it's bye bye to my baby - my last baby.

Hey presto, our little boy

A tribute to blonde curls

A couple of weeks ago we cut Buster's hair.  It was his very first haircut.

Before we do a blog post with pictures of this event, I thought it only fitting we post a few final photos paying tribute to Buster's beautiful blonde curls.

Anywhere but the cot

It's been a few weeks since Buster slept in his own cot.  The bedtime routine has always been the same, we put all the kids to bed together at the same time.  They all get tucked in, have some cuddles and kisses goodnight and then we leave them to have their sweetest of dreams.  We always go back and check on them to make sure they are asleep and to steal some extra kisses.  But a few times we've gone into the boy's room and found Buster's cot empty.  When it first happened there was a moment of panic - "where the hell is he?".  Then we found him on top of Henry's bed, with Henry fast asleep under the covers.  He'd climbed out of his cot and tried to get under Henry's covers but hadn't quite managed it and had fallen asleep with his head on Henry's pillow, next to Henry.  All very sweet.  This had happened a few nights in a row.

Then another time we'd checked on them after bedtime tuck in and Buster wasn't in his cot and wasn't in Henry's bed either.  He had snuck out of his cot and decided to creep into Milly's room and sleep on her floor.  I couldn't help but take a couple of photos as evidence.

Since then Buster has had a horrible virus that had him vomiting over a few days and us a bit worried we'd have to take him to hospital, so we had him in our bed with us to keep an eye on him.  He's been sleeping with us ever since.  Seeing as he won't sleep in the cot anymore we've bought him a 'big bed' of his own and are in the process of redecorating the boy's bedroom and setting up his own 'big bed'.  Fingers are crossed that he happily takes to his new bed and the move back into his room.  But secretly I'm enjoying having him snuggled between us at night.  He really is an angel when he's asleep and knowing he's our last little baby, we are soaking up these precious moments all we can.
